ٱدْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ
'Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction'
(Surat al-Nahl: 125)
This article is written by Taha bhai Rangwala in 2017.
In its simplest sense, the word Dawat means to “invite” people. In the context of Islam and deen, it refers to inviting people towards the worship of Khuda Ta’ala and towards haqq no rasto (the path of truth). In every zamaan, it is incumbent upon Khuda na Wali to perform Dawat - to invite people to worship Khuda Ta’ala – in the same manner as Rasulallah (SA) invited people to worship Khuda Ta’ala, because this ensures the najaati (salvation) of the individual. And najaati (salvation) of the individual is the very reason for the creation of this world. Thus performing Dawat is the most important objective and activity of Khuda na Wali in this world.
In the Quran, Khuda Ta’ala clearly states and emphasizes how Dawat should be done: with wisdom and good instruction (see above ayat). This key principle is the basis of our deen – invite and attract people towards Khuda Ta’ala via logic and reasoning. In the Quran, Khuda Ta’ala emphasizes people use “reason” in several ayats. And our Aimmat Tahereen, Duaat Mutlaqeen and Hudaat Kiram have done precisely that in the past – they have reasoned and debated with people using ilm, reasoning and logic either via writing kutub (books), delivering waaz and bayaans or sitting with individuals and having one to one discussions regarding haqq and the purpose of human existence.
Today we see those same techniques used by Syedna Taher Fakhruddin TUS in attracting and inviting people towards haqq. Maulana TUS personally delivers numerous waaz and bayaans and makes them available to the whole world via digital communication. He regularly conducts sabaqs and presides over bethaks where Mumineen can come and directly ask him any question on their mind. And he instructs Shehzadas and Shehzadis to also do the same – deliver waaz / bayaans, conduct sabaqs and always be available to answer any question raised by anyone.
This approach of imparting wisdom and good instruction has resulted in many people giving Misaaq, out of their own free will. In fact it creates a desire for people to give Misaaq to Maulana TUS, because their intellectual questions have been satisfied with reasonable and logical answers. And many more people continue to approach Maulana TUS daily and seek answers to queries that they may have.
On the other hand, people who have usurped the minbar and mehraab today do not attract people with wisdom and good instruction. Rather, they target people with one of two approaches:
Create fear
Coerce and intimidate people to follow their chosen leader and threaten people with dire consequences if they don’t. Those threats are typically on the business, financial, social or personal side. Many people can relate to these coercive threats made against them, especially in the immediate aftermath of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin’s RA wafaat.
Give worldly / material gain
The second approach is to tempt and lure people with material and worldly gains such as: title, status, prestige. Sometimes (although not always), even direct financial benefits have been promised.
Unfortunately, nowhere is the Quranic injunction being followed: to invite people with wisdom and good instruction. And both these approaches cause people’s genuine questions about deen and haqq to still remain unanswered.
I am sure many people have been subjected to the intimidation or temptation approach by the usurpers. This is very sad. Nevertheless, if you are on the quest to discover haqq, cannot sleep well at night because of burning questions after the wafaat of Burhanuddin Maula RA are still bothering you, and you have tried but cannot find answers to those questions, I invite you to approach Syedna Taher Fakhruddin TUS. I invite you to ask Maulana TUS (whether you believe in him or not) your burning questions plainly (in whatever manner or language you feel comfortable) and I assure you that your questions will be answered in the most reasonable and satisfactory way possible.
This is how Dawat should be done. This is how my Maula – the waaris of 53 previous Duat Mutlaqeen and Aimmat Tahireen – does Dawat.
